Picking Out Your Next Smartphone or Tablet: A Real-World Buyer’s Checklist – Part 2

Performance: Don’t Overbuy, Don’t Undershoot

Performance affects how long your device stays enjoyable.

For phones and tablets, performance comes from the processor and memory (RAM). If you keep a lot of apps open, play graphics-heavy games, use creative apps, or multitask on a tablet, you’ll want stronger performance and more RAM. If your usage is light, mid-range options can feel perfectly fast and often cost much less.

A smart approach is to buy for the next two to four years, not just today. A device that feels just barely enough right now may feel sluggish sooner, especially after software updates.

Storage: Think Ahead

Storage is one of the most common regrets.

If you take lots of photos, download videos, install large apps, or save files for offline use, storage fills quickly. Tablets used for school or work can also eat storage fast if you store documents, presentations, and media.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I keep lots of photos and videos on the device?

  • Do I download music, movies, or shows for travel?

  • Do I use big games or creative apps?

  • Do I prefer everything stored locally instead of in the cloud?

If you answered yes to any of these, consider going up a storage tier. Also check whether the device supports expandable storage (some do, many do not). If it doesn’t, what you buy is what you live with.

Battery Life: Look Beyond the Marketing

Battery ratings can be tricky because “all-day battery” means different things to different people.

Your real battery life depends on brightness, network conditions, the apps you use, and whether you’re gaming or streaming. If battery life is a top priority, look for larger battery capacity, power-efficient processors, and strong real-world reviews. Tablets often have great battery life for reading and video, while heavy multitasking can drain them faster.

Also consider charging speed. Faster charging can matter as much as a bigger battery if you want to top up quickly before heading out.
